Chapter 11: The Omega Who Can't Swim

The Ironwood envoy came to the guest dock two days later under a white flag.

It was a rule between packs.

An Alpha could send a delegation to the border dock to talk, and nobody could lift a hand on either side.

Bram let them come because it was the law.

He did not let me come alone.

"I'll be six feet away," he said. "I'll look bored."

"You always look bored."

"I'm working on looking more bored."

The dock stretched into the river on thick pilings, with deep green water on both sides.

The Beta was waiting at the end of it with his hands folded in front of him.

Behind him, standing back on the Ironwood shore with his arms crossed, was Cormac.

He didn't come out on the planks.

He only watched.

Felicity stood beside the Beta, holding a covered pot in both hands.

It hung off her shoulders, and the cuffs were rolled twice.

"Morven!" Her eyes filled right away. "Oh, you're really alive. I've been so worried. I made soup. Cormac said you'd be hungry."

I stopped three feet from her.

"I'm not hungry."

"It's chicken. Your favorite."

She stepped closer and held out the pot.

"He's been out of his mind, you know. He hasn't slept since the river."

"I'm sure."

"He sent me to say he's sorry."

"He can say it himself."

Her smile never moved.

She set the pot on a piling and came in to hug me.

For one second I smelled her, lavender with something metal underneath.

Her lips came close to my ear.
