Chapter 19: Deer Gap

"I don't know," I said. "I don't know when he died."

Fern sat down on the stool behind the grill.

"I've sold that man coffee every morning for seven years," she said.

"So have I. Sort of."

"Would you say it to the council?" I asked. "What you saw?"

"I'd say it to God." She wiped her hands on her apron, hard. "But it's a truck, Bryn. Seven years ago. A girl at a gas station with a long shift. He'll say I'm your best friend and I'd swear the sky is green for you."

"Would you?"

"Obviously. That's the problem."

She was right.

A memory of a truck wasn't going to beat an Alpha in front of the pack.

I needed more.

I drove home and found Gunnar in the barn, fixing a gate hinge that didn't need fixing.

"I told Fern," I said from the door.

He kept working.

"I broke your promise. I told her Colt was posted at the gap."

The hammer stopped.

"I asked you not to."

"You asked me to stand next to you and take it. I'm not going to. I'm going to prove it, with your permission or without it."

He set the hammer down.

"Fern saw his truck at the Trailhead Bar after ten that night," I said.

He closed his eyes.

"It isn't enough," I said. "I know it isn't. So I need the rest. Everything you saw. Every minute."

"Bryn."

"Take me up there."

He looked at me for a long time.

Then he took his coat off the nail.

We went up to Deer Gap at four in the afternoon, with the light going gold and long.

The snow from the first storm had melted and frozen again. Our boots broke through the crust at every step.

At the stone he stopped.

He didn't look at the names.

He looked at a flat gray rock about thirty feet up the slope, with a view straight down the border trail.

"That's the post," he said. "That's where the watch sits. You can see anything coming from Idaho for half a mile."

"Colt's rock."

"It was supposed to be."

He walked me through it.

Where his brother had stood when the rogues came over the notch. Where Glory's father had fallen, by the split pine. Where Gunnar had come up the trail at a dead run with the howl still in his ears.
