Chapter 27: The Father at the Bridge

I let it ring three times.

Then I picked it up and didn't say anything.

I could hear him breathing.

I could hear a television somewhere behind him, turned low, and nobody talking over it.

"Your mother's gone," my father said.

"Gone where?"

"Her sister's. In the valley." His voice was rough. "She packed one bag and took the station wagon. She didn't even take her knitting."

I sat up against the headboard.

"Why are you calling me?"

He was quiet a long time.

"Bridge," he said. "Tomorrow. Nine o'clock. Just you."

He hung up before I could answer.

Wyatt didn't say no this time.

He said, "I'll be in the trees," and he was.

My father was already at the white line when I walked out onto the bridge.

He was in his work coat, with his hands in the pockets.

He looked older than he had in the map room, and smaller, and I didn't like that it made something in my chest pull tight.

I stopped a foot from the line.

He looked at my stomach first.

He'd never done that before without hating it.
