Chapter 13: What Marit Bought
Nobody in the kitchen said a word after he said it.
Then my mother stood up, wiped her face with her hand, and said to the room, "Meeting's adjourned.
"Halvard needs his pills, and I need my daughter."
Nobody argued with her.
The man in the gray suit closed his briefcase.
Kjell Sundby sat with his leather folder under both hands and did not look at anyone.
Soren followed us out to the yard.
I didn't tell him to.
I didn't tell him not to either.
My mother drove her own car, and I drove mine, and the black Silverado came down the county road behind us with its lights low, the whole ten miles.
The trailer sat where it had always sat, at the end of a gravel drive, with my father's workshop leaning against it and the porch light on a timer.
I had lived there my whole life except for one year.
My mother pushed the door open, turned on the kitchen light, and put the kettle on.
Soren stopped on the step.
"Come in," my mother said, without turning round.
"You're letting the cold in, and you're going to hear this properly or not at all."
He came in.
He had to duck.
My father's chair was by the stove, and I watched him look at it and not sit.
My mother sat down at the table.
She laid both hands flat on the oilcloth, the way she did when she had a bad report to give a parent.
"I'll say it once," she said.
"Kari, you too.
"You've waited long enough."
I took the chair across from her.
Soren stood by the sink with his back against the counter.
