Chapter 21: Thirty Weeks
The pack hospital had one maternity room, and they put me in it.
Torin carried me the whole way from the assembly hall.
He ran, and nobody in the corridor got in his way.
The pack doctor met us at the door with two nurses and a wolf-healer in a green apron.
"How far apart?" he said.
"Four minutes," Torin said. "She's thirty weeks."
"I know how far she is."
They laid me on the bed.
Someone cut my dress off.
Someone slid a cold sensor over my stomach, and a screen flickered with the small gray shape I knew.
The doctor watched it for a long time.
"His heart is steady," he said. "The sac is open. This is early labor, and it's the cut. A bonded child feeds on the line, and yours has been going without for four months."
"Can you stop it?" Hazel said from the door.
"I can slow it. I won't promise more than a day."
"Do it."
He pushed a line into my arm.
The next contraction hit hard and I screamed into Torin's shoulder.
He had my hand.
He did not let go of it once.
"Breathe," he said. "With me. In."
"I hate you."
"Out."
"I hate everybody."
"I know. In."
"Mom," the pup said in my head, steady and small. "I'm okay. I want you to know I'm okay."
"You're thirty weeks."
"I'm a very big thirty."
I laughed, and it turned into a sob, and the medicine began to spread cool through my arm.
The pain stepped back.
It did not leave. It stood a little way off and waited.
"Better?" the doctor asked.
"Yes."
