Chapter 7: My Sister-in-Law Chooses Me

"Not giving it," Hazel repeated.

She stepped between Caleb and the front door.

"You've lost the right to give anything. You've lost the right to ask."

"Stay out of it, Hazel."

"Or what?"

"Or I'll have you removed from this house."

"By whom?" She looked at the two guards who had come back in from the drive and stood by the door. "Go ahead. Ask them."

The guards were large men in dark jackets who had served our pack for years. They looked at Hazel. They looked at Caleb.

Neither of them moved.

"Joanna," Caleb said, and his voice softened. He was trying a new door. "You're upset, and you have every right to be. But think about the pup. You can't travel in your first trimester. You need the pack doctor, your own bed, your own kitchen."

"My kitchen," I said.

"Our home."

"The home where you tell your girlfriend I'm a cage."

His jaw tightened.

"I never meant..."

"You did. You meant every word."

My son spoke in my head, slow and careful.

"Mom, if you stay tonight, you don't leave. I can feel it. He'll find a reason to make you stay until she gets back with her story."

"Who's she?"

"I don't know. Somebody he trusts more than you."

I put my hand over my stomach and looked at the front door.

Someone was standing in it.

I had not heard the door open.

He was a tall man in a long dark coat.

His hair was cropped close and the color of wet sand, and a scar cut through his left eyebrow.

I knew his face from the pack's gatherings, though I had never spoken to him.

Torin Mercer, Alpha of the Mercer pack. The Council's witness for disputes between packs.
