Chapter 14: The Boot
"Who was that?" Gwenna said.
She'd come around the truck with a sack of feed on her shoulder.
The Antler's side door had already banged shut.
"Meriel. On the phone."
"Saying what?"
"'Then they'll close it for him.'"
Gwenna put the sack down very slowly.
"Close what?"
I looked at the girl in the cab, chewing her pencil, safe behind glass.
"Us," I said.
We drove home faster than the gravel liked.
That night I sat up on the porch with a rifle across my knees and Gwenna asleep in the chair beside me.
Nothing came down the road.
Nothing came the next night either.
On Thursday morning a whole line of trucks came down the west road from Ravensworth.
Eight of them. Then ten.
Gwenna stood up beside me. "That's not a visit."
The trucks stopped in my yard in a ragged half circle.
Ravensworth wolves climbed out. Orchard hands, the feed store owner, two of the Antler's regulars.
Lorcan's Beta came first, a thick-necked man I'd known since kindergarten.
