Chapter 15: Hold Still

Nathan drove us home from the restaurant because Mom said her pride could ride in the front seat and her hip in the back.

She was asleep before we reached the ramp.

He carried nothing and held the door, and when she'd gone into the bedroom with her cane, he came back out onto the porch.

I was sitting on the top step with a dish towel wrapped around my left hand.

"What happened?" he asked.

"A glass. I put it down hard."

"Let me see."

"It's nothing."

"Let me see anyway."

He sat one step below me and took my hand in both of his.

His fingers were warm and dry and steady, and he unwound the towel slowly.

The cut ran across the base of my palm.

"This needs a strip," he said. "Stay there."

He went to his truck and came back with a first-aid kit the size of a lunch box.

He cleaned the cut.

I watched his thumb hold my wrist, right over the pulse.

My pulse was fast.

I told myself it was the cut.

"Hold still," he said quietly, and pressed the strip down with the flat of his thumb.

It stayed there a moment longer than it needed to.

He looked up.

"You've been quiet since dinner," he said.

"His father made him say it out loud."

"Say what?"

"Why he didn't come."

Nathan waited.

He was good at that, and he kept his hand near me, not on me.

"I called him from the hospital," I said. "Before the surgery. She was in prep. I asked him to come, just to sit in the room. Not to do anything. I wanted someone there."
