Chapter 17: Nathan's Recording

Nathan's POV

The call came to the front desk at ten past nine, and our receptionist held the receiver out to me with her eyebrows up.

"Says she's family," she whispered. "Says she's Mrs. Larkin's daughter-in-law."

"Mrs. Larkin has one child."

"I know."

"Put her through to my office, and stay on the desk line."

She nodded and grinned, which I had been trying to stop her doing for six years.

I closed my door.

I took out my phone, opened the recorder, and pressed the red button before I answered.

"Rehab, this is Nathan."

"Oh, thank goodness." The voice was warm and breathless. "I'm so sorry to bother you. This is Kendra Sanderling. I'm Bridget's sister-in-law, and I'm trying to make sure her mother has everything she needs."

"Sanderling."

"That's my married name. It's new."

"Congratulations."

"Thank you." A pleased little laugh. "The thing is, Bridget's been under a lot of stress, and she's not thinking clearly. I'd like to be listed as a contact on Mrs. Larkin's file. In case of emergencies."

"I'm sorry, we can't do that without the patient's signature."

"I understand. I thought maybe, if I explained the situation to you directly."

"Go ahead."

I leaned back in my chair.

Through the glass I could see Mrs. Larkin on the parallel bars, glaring at a rubber band.

She didn't know I was on the phone.

I turned the screen so my own thumb hovered over the button, and kept it recording.

"Bridget and I have had a falling out," Kendra said. "She thinks I took something from her. Honestly, I think she gave it to me. She walked out on a perfectly good life and handed over the keys."
