At the airport I pushed Mom's wheelchair through security myself.

An agent waved us to the front of the line and handed me a tray for her cane.

We found two seats near the gate with a view of the runway.

I opened the message I had written for both families.

It was short.

It said I had ended my engagement to Brett Sanderling, that I would not be at the wedding, and that anyone who wanted to know why could read the attached records.

I attached the spreadsheet.

I attached the photos of the passes and the group chat screenshots Kendra had sent me herself.

I added the newest one, with Brett's line about doing the real thing tomorrow.

Then I sent it to every address on the guest list.

For the next ten minutes my phone shook against my knee.

Brett called.

His mother called.

Colin called twice.

I turned off the ringer.

Mom took a sip of her water.

"Your aunt is going to be thrilled," she said. "She never liked his shoes."

I laughed, and then my eyes stung.

Mom patted my hand.

"Not here," she said. "Cry in Oregon. They've got good tissues."

My phone lit up with a number I knew.

Brett's mother.

I let it ring a long time.

Then I picked up, because she had once knitted me a scarf.

"Bridget, honey, please," she said. Her voice was thin. "Tell me this is a mistake."

"It isn't."

"The guests are standing around. Kendra is still in the dress."

"I know."

"Come back and talk to him. Whatever he did, he'll fix it."
