Chapter 14: Arm Two
"Good," I said.
Kit raised his eyebrows.
"Good?"
"I want to be in the front row."
The Kestrel test center sat on a flat stretch of land outside Boulder, all glass and steel with the mountains behind it.
The auditorium held about four hundred people.
It was full by eight in the morning.
Teams, families, Kestrel engineers in gray jackets, a camera crew from a Denver station.
The big screen above the stage showed a live feed from the test floor next door.
A steel chamber the size of a refrigerator, with a round window in the door and frost already forming on the glass.
A digital readout in the corner of the screen said: Chamber temp, 21 C.
My mother had flown in on a red-eye.
She sat next to me in the second row with a DTI pennant Kit had bought her in the gift shop.
Kit sat on my other side, knee bouncing.
I had Notebook 4 in a plastic sleeve on my lap.
