Chapter 16: Up There
My mother stopped walking.
Kit stopped a step behind me.
A few people from other teams were loading cars nearby.
They stopped too.
"Meant to be with you," I said.
"You know what I mean." Trent spread his hands. "I told the truth in there. For you. I've changed, Sunny."
"You told the truth because she dumped you three times."
He flinched.
"That's not fair."
"I've said all of this to you before," I said. "I'm only saying it once more with witnesses."
He opened his mouth.
"And ten minutes ago you watched her call me a liar for the third time, and only then you stood up."
"I stood up," he said. "Doesn't that count?"
"It counts," I said. "It's the only decent thing you've done in two years."
His face softened with hope.
"But it doesn't make me yours."
He stared at me.
"Take my notebooks out of the folder," I said. "Delete the folder. Then delete my number."
"Erica."
"I'm not going home with you, Trent. I'm not going home with anybody. I'm going to California in October."
He looked past me, at Kit.
Something ugly came into his face.
"Is it him? Is that it? You've known him for five minutes."
"I've known him seven months," I said. "He's never once asked for my password."
Somebody by the next car laughed out loud.
