The folder was gray, thick and held shut with a rubber band.
Ilse put it on the dining table at noon, set a pot of coffee beside it, and did not leave.
"I'm staying," she said. "He'll want me to say the parts he can't."
"Ilse," Benedikt said.
"Sit."
Benedikt sat.
Oren stood at the end of the table in one of Benedikt's shirts and looked at the folder.
He had been trying to remember how to breathe since the kitchen.
"My mother died of an overdose," he said. "In the stairwell at St. Brendan's, six years ago. She worked nights there. She'd been clean for nine years."
"I know," Ilse said. "I read the report."
"She hadn't touched anything."
"I know that too."
She slid the first page across.
It was a death certificate, a hospital incident form, and a copy of a police note that said, in four lines, that there was no reason to investigate.
"Egon Tarvik's club has been paying the St. Brendan's night supervisor for eleven years," Ilse said. "The supervisor signed this. I have the check stubs."
