Chapter 22: What She Said

"Thank you," Kyla said into the microphone. "Thank you all for being here."

Her voice was soft and shaky and perfect.

Four hundred people leaned toward it.

"I've had a hard month."

She laid one crutch against the lectern.

"I've lost a leg for a while, and I may have lost my career."

"And tonight I've lost someone I thought was my coach."

At the next table, Dane's shoulders dropped.

He thought he was being rescued.

"I want to be fair," Kyla said. "A lot of people have been hurt."

"And I think some of them are very, very angry, and they've found a way to make me the villain."

Her eyes slid across the ballroom and landed on me.

"Nina Faulk is my oldest friend," she said.

"And last week she sent a letter to my father saying I would fall. She wrote the date. She wrote the minute."

"Then she sat in the front row of that stadium and watched it happen."

"I can't think of any reason to do that but one."

There was a rustle through the room, a turning of heads.

My father's fork hit his plate.

"I don't want to say it," Kyla said, and her voice cracked beautifully. "But I think my friend wanted me to get hurt."
