Chapter 28: Ask Me Saturday

Rhona's POV

On Saturday at noon I stood in the clubhouse lot on the same patch of gravel where my husband had thrown me out.

The banner from the anniversary party still hung off the porch rail, with one corner torn.

Two hundred bikes stood in rows.

Nobody had gone home since the bridge.

Mae rolled a steel drum into the middle of the lot, and Pia dropped a carton beside it with a thud.

"Two hundred memorial cards," Mae said. "One missing."

I took the missing one out of my jacket pocket.

I had carried it for sixteen days, creased down the middle, with my name in black letters and a date I hadn't died on.

"Burn them," I said.

Mae tipped the carton and the cards fell into the drum.

I dropped mine on top, and Pia struck a match and held it to the corner, because Pia always has a match.

The paper curled, and my name went brown, and then black.

A rider near the front took off his cap.

Then another did, and then all of them, in a long ripple, until the whole lot stood with their heads bare.

I hadn't expected that.

My throat did something I had to wait out.

When I looked up, Rhett was standing in front of me.

He had no vest on.

He wore a clean white shirt, buttoned to the neck over the strapping, and he had shaved around the scar in his eyebrow.

"Rhona," he said.

"Rhett."

"I said something in this spot that I can't take back."

"No, you can't."
