Chapter 17: For the Lens

"Turn it a little to the left," Bartek said from the stepladder. "I want the bed in the shot."

Ingmar stood below with a hand steadying the frame.

"You understand," he said, "that you are aiming a hidden camera at my own mattress, on purpose."

"I understand that your aunt already has the bench and the floor, and I'd like the bed to be well lit." Bartek twisted the small black lens an inch. "If she's going to watch, she can watch properly."

It was Saturday night, a day and a half after the garage.

He had spent the whole of Friday being furious and the whole of Saturday morning being sick.

At noon, over cold toast, Ingmar had told him about the housekeeper and the ceiling.

Bartek had listened to every word without moving.

Then he had said, "Does it still record?"

"Until two each night. Then it uploads," Ingmar had said.

"Does Hedvig know you've found it?" Bartek had asked.

"No."

"Good," Bartek had said, and Ingmar had stared at him.

Now he climbed down.

The playroom was lit by a single lamp.

It looked different every time he entered it, warmer and less severe.

He took off his jacket.

"Here is the plan," he said.

"I was not aware you had one."

"I've had it since lunch." Bartek folded the jacket over the bench. "She wants to show the board a recording. She wants them to see two men, and be disgusted, and vote. So I'm going to give her one."

"Bartek."

"But she's getting mine, not hers." He turned. "I'm going to look at that lens and tell her exactly who I am and what I'm doing, and who paid me, and how much. And then I'm going to do something your aunt can't show a boardroom without playing every second of it, including my face."

Ingmar's expression did not change.

"You are talking about a performance."

"I'm talking about a dare," Bartek said. "Dare you."
