Chapter 23: Sunday Dinner
"Your fold is wrong," Zosia said.
Ingmar looked down at the pierogi in his palm.
It was a round of dough with a spoonful of potato in it, and he had pinched the edge shut with great seriousness.
"It is sealed," he said.
"It's sealed like a bank vault. You want a crimp. Like this." She took another round from the board, and her thumb ran along the edge, quick, in a pattern of small neat waves. "Again."
Ingmar tried again.
The second one was better.
The third was a distinct improvement, and Zosia looked at it and said, "Huh."
Bartek leaned on the counter with a glass of wine and watched.
The kitchen on Karlov Avenue was warm and loud and steamy, the radiator knocking, the orange wallpaper bright under the fluorescent light.
On the table sat a mountain of flour, a bowl of potato and cheese, a bowl of cherries, and a dish of melted butter.
Ingmar stood at the board in shirtsleeves, with flour to the elbows and a dish towel tucked into his belt.
He had never looked happier in his life.
"You know he's fifty," Zosia said to the dough.
"Thirty-seven," Ingmar said.
"You hold your shoulders like fifty."
"I have been told."
"By me. Just now." She slapped a round of dough into his hand. "Relax the shoulders. It's a dumpling, not a hostage."
Ingmar's shoulders came down.
He pinched the edge shut, and crimped it, and set it on the tray with the others, and Bartek's heart did something stupid.
