Chapter 20: Her Door

The taxi stopped outside my mother's house at 12:52.

I watched from the dark front window with my hand on the lock.

He came up the walk fast, then slowed down at the step.

I opened the door before he could knock.

"It's yet," I said.

He stood on the porch with his jacket open and his chest going up and down.

"I took a cab," he said.

"I'm sorry about the money."

"Come in, Lucas."

He came in.

I shut the door behind him and put my back against it.

I pulled him in by his shirt until his body pressed me flat to the wood.

The hall was dark and smelled like my mother's furniture polish.

I kissed him with all of it, every day I'd been angry and every day I hadn't.

He groaned into my mouth and his hands went to my face.

"Not yet," he said, almost laughing, "was the last thing you told me."

"I changed it."

"Magda."

"My house," I said.

"My door.

"My rules.

"Take your shirt off."

He undid the buttons with shaking fingers and dropped the shirt on the hall floor.

I put my palms flat on his chest.

His skin was hot, and his heart hammered under my hand.

I pushed him backward until his legs hit the bottom stair, and he sat down on the second step.
