Chapter 27: It'll Hold

"Thank you, Bree," I said into the microphone. "That's a lovely idea."

She beamed.

"I want to tell you about my heart for a minute. Mine has a hole in one of its valves, and it runs in my family."

A few women in the audience made soft, sorry sounds.

"Three weeks before my operation, my savings were taken. Forty-eight thousand dollars. It was the money from my mother's house, and my mother died of the same thing."

The soft sounds stopped.

Bree's smile held. Her hand came to rest lightly on my arm.

"Vic, sweetheart, let's not do this today."

"You said you wanted me to say a few words."

"I meant about the fund."

"This is about the fund," I said. "It's about where the money for a heart goes."

I stepped sideways, out of her reach.

The cameraman had his lens on me. The man beside him had stopped looking at his phone.

"The person who planned that theft is standing next to me," I said. "I'd like three people to come up and meet her."

There was a stir at the back of the hall.

The cream-aproned girl at the stage door put her hand over her mouth.

A woman in her thirties came down the center aisle in a green raincoat, carrying a binder against her stomach.

She wasn't hurrying, and she didn't look at Bree until she reached the first step.

The Tampa woman climbed up and stood on my other side.

"Hello, Bree," she said.

"I'm sorry," Bree said to the room, with a bewildered laugh. "I don't know this person."

"You sent me flowers for two years."

The Tampa woman opened the binder to a plastic sleeve and held it up for the front rows.
