Chapter 7: The Wolf Went Quiet

Duarte's POV

My wolf had been quiet for three hours, and I did not trust it.

For ten years it had paced under my ribs, black and heavy and restless, and I had fed it work and kept it on a short chain.

Tonight it lay down on the floor of my office at the Fairhaven plant, with her smell all over the room, and it slept.

I sat in my chair with my trousers half done up and her work shirt in my lap, and I did not move.

She was asleep on the leather couch under my overcoat, one arm hanging off the edge, her hair across her face.

She had told me at midnight that she would only rest her eyes.

I had said yes to that, as I had said yes to everything she asked.

I looked at her hands, the nicks along the knuckles from the shucking knife, and I felt something in my chest that I had not allowed myself in two years.

I told myself I had it under control.

I told myself twice.

Then she woke and sat up and looked at me across the dim office with her hair wild.

"What time is it?" she said.

"Ten to three," I said.

"I have the scale at five."

"I'll drive you."

"It's a ten-minute walk over the bridge," she said.

"Then I'll walk you."

She laughed, low and still sleepy, and it went through me all the way down.
