Chapter 9: I Know
"I know," Laz said.
He said it in the flat voice, the one he used at the kafeneio.
He did not stand.
He put down the pencil and looked at me across the desk with his hands folded, and I understood that he had been waiting for this since the day he took my mother's icon seriously.
"You know," I said.
"Yes."
"How long?" I asked.
"A few days."
"A few days."
I stepped into the room.
It was a small, dark study with a rolltop desk and shelves of ledgers and a framed photograph of a sponge boat in the harbor, 1962.
I closed the door behind me, because Despina was in the house.
"You know my brother lied to me," I said.
"You know he is not on any ship.
"You've known for a few days, and you took me to the cottage, and you took me to the warehouse, and you let me sleep in your bed."
"Thalia," he said.
"You let me say good morning to your grandmother."
"I wanted..." he said.
"What?"
"To find out what he did before I told you," he said.
