Chapter 13: The Breach
The shutter came down on the loading dock floor with the sound of a car crash, and Gong Ting was already moving.
Eleven years of training took over.
He counted doors, counted men, counted the distance from the dock to the stairs.
Forty yards of open concrete.
Behind the fallen steel a truck engine screamed, and the first of the raiders came through the gap with torches and iron bars.
"Back!" he roared. "Back to the stairwell! Hold the choke!"
The guards fell back.
They did it well, in pairs, as he had drilled them.
He went last, with Bai Jin on the rope behind him and the rifle at his shoulder.
There was a place where the south stairs narrowed, between two concrete pillars and an iron rail.
Six feet wide, no more.
He had picked it in his first week.
He stopped in the middle of it and turned.
"Pallets," he said.
Four guards tipped a stack of loaded pallets across the width of the stairwell, a low wall of wood and cardboard.
