My Double Proxy Marriage to a Billionaire novel · Chapter 24 of 24
Chapter 24: Both of Us in the Room
We were married on Saturday the twelfth of December in the big shed at Hagedorn Marine.
The lake lay frozen white behind the open doors.
The foreman had hauled out the engine hoists and swept the concrete.
Thirty-one folding chairs stood in front rows, and every one of them was filled by somebody in their best coveralls.
Behind them sat the woman in the green suit, the gardener, the housekeeper, and the doctor who had refused Greta's lipstick.
My mother's sign hung over the open doors, freshly painted.
It said HAGEDORN MARINE. ENGINES. REPAIRS. HONEST PRICES.
The last word was back.
The old launch sat on her cradle at the head of the aisle, hull gleaming.
The gardener had trucked her over in November, and someone had tied a ribbon along her brass rail.
Greta waited in the front row in a wheelchair, with her loon cane across her knees.
She wore a hat with a pheasant feather in it.
She had her lipstick on and a blanket over her legs, and she was looking at the doors.
I didn't have anyone to walk me down.
I'd decided that months ago, on a cot, in the dark.
