Chapter 24: The Useful Exit
The attendant at the door of the ball drew a very large breath.
"Ordinary volume," Caerovan said, "please."
The attendant let the breath out slowly and announced them at the volume of ordinary conversation.
Nobody turned.
Ysmerelle walked in with her hand on the duke's arm and her handbag hanging from his other one.
It looked odd there.
He carried it very upright, and he kept glancing into the opening.
"It's light," she said. "My gloves, my comb, my key and a grape."
"In case."
"In case."
The hostess, who was the woman who had asked about the floor, met them at the foot of the ballroom steps.
"It's warm," she said, and tapped the boards with her shoe. "I had them heated."
"We're grateful," said Ysmerelle.
"I'm not," said the hostess cheerfully. "It cost a fortune."
The first dance was a waltz, and the cellist had been given the night off to dance it.
The cellist asked Ysmerelle for it, and she gave it to him, and Caerovan stood at the edge of the floor holding her bag.
