Chapter 19: What the Cabin Held

The sheriff read the second column to us in his office, with the ledger lying open on his desk under plastic.

He didn't want to, and he did it anyway.

"It's dated entries, Lydia. Starting three years ago last November."

"A mark by each date, and a few words. 'L, evening glass, one tablet.'"

"Some of them say two."

"There's one for April twelfth of this year."

"'L called the sheriff's office. Three tablets in her wine. Deputy drove her in.'"

The room went silent.

I knew that night.

I remembered the phone, the kitchen, the first sip of red wine.

I remembered nothing after the sip.

The next thing I knew I was in a hospital bed in a thin gown.

A doctor was telling me gently what an episode was.

"I thought I was losing my mind," I said.

"You weren't," the sheriff said. "You were being dosed."

"By the man I married for three years."

"No, ma'am," said Lorne, in a voice I had never heard from him.

"By my brother."

I put my head down on my arms on the sheriff's desk, and Lorne's hand came onto the back of my neck and stayed.

The next morning he asked me to drive him to Cove Road.
