Chapter 15: Dune Street

The house on Dune Street was smaller than I remembered.

Most things from your twenties are.

Gabe parked at the curb on Saturday at four, with the sun going orange over the roofs.

We sat for a minute looking at the sign in the yard.

FOR SALE, it said, in cheerful red.

The porch had a new rail.

The old blue paint was peeling off the door in curls.

"The landlord gave me the key," Gabe said.

"He's the man from the Reformed church who sells bait."

"He said walk through it whenever you like, it's empty till the first showing."

"Did you tell him why?"

"I said I left a tool in the garage."

"Did you?"

"No." He turned the key over in his hand. "I wanted you to see it before a stranger puts a rug in it."

I got out of the van and went up the three steps by myself.

The door stuck, the way it always had, and I put my shoulder to it.

It gave.

The front room was bare and cold, with a pale square on the wall where somebody's mirror used to hang.

The air smelled of dust and radiator heat and old cooking.

"I can't believe it's the same smell," I said.

"What smell?"

"Us. Rented house and onions and your mother's pot roast."

"She brought that to every Sunday for a year."

"It was awful pot roast."
