Chapter 7: Her Own Lens

Gideon was on Nell's doorstep at seven the next morning with my prosthetic in one hand and two coffees in the other.

He had gone back into the building alone at midnight, after the firefighters cleared the stairs.

"It's got ash on the liner," he said. "I wiped it down. I didn't touch the socket."

I took it from him.

Nothing on that leg had ever looked so good.

"Thank you," I said. "I'm sorry I said it didn't count."

"It didn't count. You'd said so."

"Do you always agree with people who are wrong?"

"Only when they're carrying a prosthetic leg and I'm not."

I laughed before I could stop myself, and he looked relieved about it.

I told him about the email.

I told him there was one open wall left at the senior exhibition and that it closed at midnight, and that I had no camera.

He listened to all of it with his arms crossed.

"I have a studio," he said. "It's a converted garage over on Teller Street. Two bodies, a window that faces north, and a pile of reflectors. You can have all of it until midnight."

"I can't pay you."

"I'm not asking you to."

"Why?"

"Because I took forty frames of that lawn," he said, "and I'd like one of them to be the last thing anyone remembers about it. I don't want it to be Paige's."

It was the most honest answer anyone had given me all week.

The garage had a sliding door and a loft with a bed and one very large window.

Gideon showed me where the light switches were, then put a camera in my hands and went to sit on a stool by the wall.

"I'll stay out of the frame."

"You'll hold the reflector."

"Fine."

I spent two hours doing nothing.

I stood in front of the window with the camera and looked at myself in a mirror he had propped against the wall.
