Chapter 24: The Foot of the Table
The church hall's Sunday table was set for eighty, and nobody had told me where I was to sit.
It was the second Sunday after the gate.
The paper cloths were laid in their rows, and the long serving counter ran with lamb and lemon potatoes.
A tray of red eggs sat at the end, left over from Pascha.
The priest had asked for it.
He had come to the cottage himself on the Tuesday, in his black cassock, and sat on the porch with a cup of Kostas's coffee.
He said the parish had been a long time without its table, and that a hungry neighborhood did not care whose hands set it.
Kostas had said he would come.
He had not said anything about me.
I stood in the doorway in my gray coat, as I had stood once before, with my hands knotted together.
Every woman in the hall stopped talking.
It was the same silence, and it did not feel the same.
"Fay," Kostas said, beside me.
He wore his dark suit and no tie.
He had taken my hand in the parking lot and had not let it go.
"I could stay in the car," I said.
"You could," he said.
"I'd like to."
"I know. I would not mind. But I would like to be at that table with you, and I do not think I can do it without."
I looked at him.
"That's the first thing you've asked me for since the gate," I said.
"Yes."
"I'm counting."
He kissed my temple, in front of the whole parish, and I felt the room's silence change.
We walked in.
The long head table stood at the far end under the icon of the Mother of God.
