Chapter 13: Twenty Dollars
Dakota read the photo over my shoulder and said a word the theater kid wrote down for later.
"He barred you," she said. "From a science fair."
"From the student and staff entrance," I said.
I zoomed in on the sheet. The dean's handwriting slanted hard to the right.
"The Showcase has two doors," I said. "One for students and staff. One for the public."
The claw-clip girl looked up from her phone.
"The public door is on Forbes," she said. "Twenty dollars a ticket. They don't check names. They check wristbands."
The kid woke up on the couch and squinted at us.
"What's happening?"
"Your sister's going to buy a ticket to her own project," Dakota said.
The kid sat up. "I'm coming."
"You have school."
"It's at six p.m., Rhi."
He had me there.
Friday at 5:40, I stood in line on Forbes Avenue behind a dentist and his wife.
I wore the black dress from my cousin's wedding, with my flannel over it and the hex key in my hair.
Behind me, Dakota and the kid steered a moving dolly with a pine box strapped to it under a painter's tarp.
