Chapter 8: Pasadena

I stood in the lobby holding three dozen roses I didn't want.

"Is he right?" I asked.

Caelen took the roses out of my arms and handed them to the receptionist.

"Put these somewhere sunny," he said. "Somewhere nobody has to look at them."

Then he looked at me.

"He's half right."

"Which half?"

"The clip proves the date's a lie," he said. "It also proves you signed it. Their lawyers will say you knew. That you were in on it with your fiancé and got cold feet once the cake hit."

"I didn't know."

"I believe you. A jury has to as well."

We went back up to the glass room.

He wrote on the whiteboard in big square capitals.

BACKDATED. PROVEN.

DECEIVED. NOT PROVEN.

"So we prove I was deceived," I said.

"We prove they used the letter before you ever signed it." He tapped the date. "Why date it September second? Why not October? What happened between September second and October seventeenth that needed this page to exist?"

I stared at the board.

Then I remembered a dinner.

A steakhouse in Beverly Hills, early September.

Spencer had raised his glass to his investors.

"His teachers," I said.

"His what?"

"He had a club of retired schoolteachers in Pasadena. He bragged about them. He said they trusted him with their pensions because he was the only man in L.A. who'd ever kept a promise."

Caelen picked up his phone.

"Pack a bag," he said. "We're going to Pasadena."

We flew out on Monday morning.

He'd booked the last two seats on the plane.
