Chapter 24: Away
The visiting room at the county detention center had six steel tables and a guard by the door.
My mother was already seated at the last one, in an orange jumpsuit that hung off her shoulders.
They had taken her pearls.
Her silver hair had grown out grey at the roots, and without the cardigan she looked her age.
She stood when I came in, and she smiled.
It was the same smile, and I could see how long she had practised it.
"Willa. You look well. Is the new kidney behaving?"
"It's behaving."
"I'm glad. I truly am." She sat and folded her hands on the table.
I stayed on my feet for a moment and then sat across from her.
The guard turned to look at the clock.
"I have twenty minutes," I said. "You asked for me."
"I asked about the letter."
I waited.
"My lawyer says a statement from the family would help at sentencing. One sentence, in your own hand." She slid a sheet of lined paper across the steel, with a pen on top. "That you forgive what was done in a time of fear."
"Forgive."
"I'm not asking for an apology anymore. I know you're angry." She lowered her voice. "Callie's gone to the prosecutors. Benton won't speak to me. I have nobody, darling. I have only you."
I looked at the paper.
The lines ran straight across, and the pen had a bitten cap.
