Chapter 24: The Vote
"Tomorrow," Arlo said. "They can do that?"
"They just did."
"Why would they rush it? They're losing."
"That's why." I put the phone back in my apron. "His board meets at eight tomorrow morning. If they throw him out, the next CEO might drop the project. Damon wants the pier condemned while it's still his name on the paper."
Arlo looked down the boards at the arcade. A black shell, still taped off.
"And they'll point at that."
"They'll point at that."
We closed the diner at six on Sunday and spread everything across two booths.
The order pads, all 2,214 names.
The folders I'd made out of the shoebox. BILLS. MORE BILLS. SCARY BILLS. A new one, in my handwriting: PAID.
The fire captain's report.
I worked until two in the morning, and Arlo kept the coffee coming.
On Monday at nine, I sat in the infusion room on the ninth floor with my father.
"The council's at four," I told him. "I can't stay for the whole bag."
He waved his free hand at the door.
"Go. Make them sorry."
"Dad."
"I've sat in that chamber forty times. They like numbers and they hate speeches. Don't give a speech."
