Chapter 8: Not Your Medicine

"Medicine doesn't argue," Cassian said.

"Then I'm not medicine."

We stood on opposite sides of his bed with the candle between us, and Hester had the sense to leave.

"You want me to stay in a room until the lines stop," I said.

"You want a hand on me whenever it burns. That isn't a woman. That's a poultice."

His jaw worked.

"I'm afraid," he said.

He said it flatly, as he'd say the time.

"Of dying?"

"Of using you." He looked at the bed. "I've never needed anything before. I don't know how to need you without taking."

I came around the bed slowly.

I took his hand and put it on my own face.

"Ask me," I said. "You've been a king for five years. You've never asked for a thing."

"Idony."

"Ask."

He breathed out.

"Will you stay?" he said. "Not because the lines run. Because I'd like you here."

"Tonight," I said. "And tomorrow I'm going to the river quarter. Alone, with two of your guards at the corner of the street."
