I slept in the feed-store office on a cot the night man fetched from the scale house.
He did not ask me anything.
He brought a wool blanket, a pot of coffee and a space heater with a frayed cord.
"I'll be in the scale house, Miss Amaia," he said, and went out.
I took the iron ring out of my apron pocket and set it on my desk.
It was a plain black band, as wide as a nail.
I had worn it in front of forty people and never once felt it on my hand.
I laid it on the blotter next to the mug that was not mine.
The truck keys still hung on the hook by the kitchen door at Owyhee, where I had left them.
I had not asked for them in two days, and I told myself it was because I did not need them.
At seven in the morning the drivers came in.
They came one at a time and stood in the door with their caps in their hands.
Not one of them said a word about the night before.
The man with the gray mustache set a paper cup of coffee on my desk and a plate of eggs wrapped in foil.
