Chapter 20: The Widow's Table
Tomasz's widow set the table for twelve.
She did it herself, with the lace cloth, and she would not let me help.
I stood in her kitchen in my good black dress with a dish of sarma I had made badly.
I watched her lay out thirteen plates, and then take one away.
"For Tomasz," she said.
"Always one for him for forty years.
"I took it away today."
It was a Sunday afternoon in the first week of February, and the whole harbor was coming to her house.
I had not known it until Xander told me on the porch that morning.
"She has asked the old foremen," he said.
"Every one who worked beside Tomasz.
"She says they have a right."
"To what?" I had asked.
"To hear it from me," he said.
"In person, at her table."
They came at three, in their church coats, nine old men with their caps in their hands, stamping snow in the hall.
I knew most of them.
They had been at my mother's funeral.
They sat down around the lace cloth in the little kitchen with their big hands on their knees.
