Chapter 13: Nine Men

The doors of the hall opened, and my father walked in with nine men.

He wore the good grey suit and the gold cross.

He stopped just inside, under the lamps, and looked down the tables with a face full of warm regret.

"Aristides," Petros Mavrakis said. "Forgive me. I heard there was a supper."

Nobody answered him.

The Pallis cousins had come up out of their chairs all together.

They stood with their hands loose and their eyes on the nine men by the door.

My father's gaze went down the hall until it found me.

"Thalia," he said gently. "You've had a long week. Come home."

"No, Papa."

I said it flat.

He smiled.

Then his eyes moved to the doorway behind me.

The thin fair man in the dark jacket stood there with the white bundle in his arms.

The smile did not change.

It went somewhere behind his eyes.

"There's my godson," my father said.

The diver took a step back.

The baby woke and made a small cross sound.

"Give him to me," Petros said, warmly, and held out his arms. "I stood for that child at the font. He knows my face."

I went between them.

I did it without thinking, and I stood in the middle of the floor with my hands open and empty.
