Chapter 21: The Night Before
Aris's POV
On the night before Good Friday I could not sleep, and she knew it before I did.
She lay beside me in the loft in the dark with her head on my arm.
Her hand lay flat on my chest, where she had first put it in that same room.
"You're counting," Thalia said.
"I am not."
"Your heart is. It does it in fives."
I laughed, a short breath.
She was right.
I had been counting since the priest closed the meeting, and the number I kept coming to was thirty years.
That was how long my son had walked behind the bier.
I took the phone from the chart table.
I had not played it for her.
I had played it for the dog and the walls for a year of nights.
I had never once played it for another living person.
"Listen," I said.
I put it on the pillow between us and touched the screen.
The voice came out thin and warm, with the sound of water behind it.
"Pop, it's me. I need to talk to you about the Gulf boats. Call me when you're off the water."
I watched her face in the dark.
