Chapter 7: The Gulf Boats
In the morning I gave him the Gulf boats.
I did it standing at the chart table with a pencil, and I drew the river from memory.
"The Mavrakis boats don't go to the Gulf for sponge," I said. "They go out past the Key, and they meet yours."
The old man bent over the paper.
"On the first and third Tuesday of the month," I said. "In the dark, a mile off the wreck, with the running lights off."
"For what?"
"Boxes under the sponge. Cash going out of the Pallis sheds. Pills coming in."
I drew the Key and put an X.
"Your captains take it aboard at the wreck and carry it home in the holds, under the sponge.
It goes into your packing sheds where nobody looks."
He said nothing.
The pencil scratched.
"I never knew who on your side took the money," I said.
"My father kept that away from me," I said. "I heard it as numbers at the table. Two boats, two Tuesdays, a Pallis cut."
"A Pallis cut," he said.
"Somebody on your side takes a share. That's how it stays quiet."
