Chapter 9: The Loft
I went down at midnight.
The loft was dark except for the stove, which burned low and orange behind its glass.
He had not lit a lamp.
He sat on the edge of the cot in his shirtsleeves with his hands on his knees.
He did not speak.
He had said he would say nothing, and he was a man who kept to what he said.
I shut the door and put the bolt on from the inside.
I heard him breathe in.
"I'm starting it myself, Admiral," I said.
His head came up.
"You said I'd have to," I said. "So I am."
I took off my mother's coat and laid it over the chart table.
I took off my shoes.
Under the coat I wore a black sweater and jeans.
I took the sweater off over my head and dropped it on the floor.
The stove light moved on my skin.
I had never done this for a man who was only allowed to look.
I had done it for men who took, or for the work.
I had done it in hotel rooms with a gun in the drawer, and I had always known where my hands were.
Now I did not.
My hands wanted to shake.
I made them unhook my bra instead.
His eyes went over me, slowly, from my throat to my waist.
He didn't move.
A muscle jumped in his jaw.
"Look at me," I said.
He looked at my face.
"Now the rest."
His gaze dropped.
It was heavy.
I felt it on my breasts, on the scar under my ribs, on my stomach.
My nipples hardened under it before anyone had touched me.
I stepped out of my jeans.
I walked to him in my underwear and stood between his knees.
He still hadn't touched me.
His hands lay open on his thighs, the fingers curled, and I saw the knuckles go white.
"You can say my name," I said.
