Chapter 22: The Five Chairs

Luca's POV

I have sat in front of the five chairs four times, and I have never sat as still as I did that day.

The three heads of the neutral families filled the dais, old men with white hair, each with a glass of water and a folded paper.

The eldest rapped the table once with his ring.

"We are here by the custom," he said. "A complaint has been brought by Aurelio Costanzo, against Luca Vannelli. Costanzo, speak."

Aurelio rose.

He buttoned his jacket over his stomach, and he looked at the old men with the soft, wet-eyed face he used for priests.

"Gentlemen, I'll be short. I am a father."

I heard Raffaela breathe in beside me.

"Two weeks ago a man came to my house in the rain and took my daughter," Aurelio said. "A girl who has never known another roof. He had her sign. He kept her in a stone house behind iron gates. He would not let me see her for six days."

"You came to the gate," I said. "I made you wait."

"In the rain."

"In the rain."

Someone on the dais coughed.

"I bring no charge about the war," Aurelio went on, with a wave of his hand. "The war is the war. I charge that Vannelli, who talks of his sister, has done to a Costanzo girl what he swore was done to his own."
