Chapter 10: Recliner
I let myself in with the brass key at ten past one, still in my church dress.
Gus lifted his gray head off the rug and thumped his tail twice.
Mass had been the longest hour of my life.
I had sat in the back pew of St. Cyril's, three rows behind the man who was ushering my father's old section.
Watched the back of Milan's neck above his collar.
He hadn't turned around once.
Now he sat in the recliner by the woodstove with the Sunday paper open on his knee and his boots off and his sleeves rolled.
The stove ticked.
The front room was warm, and the light through the lace curtains lay in squares on the braided rug.
He folded the paper.
"Carly."
"I got your key to work."
"Come in. Shut the door. Sit down on the footstool," he said.
He folded his hands.
"I have to tell you something, and I need you to hear all of it before you say a word."
"No," I said.
"Carly."
"I know what it is. Whatever it is," I said. "I don't want it yet."
I took off my coat, and hung it on the hook.
I walked across the rug in my stockings and stood in front of the recliner.
He looked up at me, with his face serious.
"You promised me orders," I said.
"I did."
"So give me one."
His eyes went over me, and I watched him decide, and I watched what he wanted win over what he had planned to say.
He leaned back in the chair.
He set both hands on the armrests.
"Take your shoes off," he said, rough. "Then get down on your knees."
My mouth went dry.
I stepped out of my shoes.
I knelt on the braided rug between his boots, with my skirt around my knees.
The heat of the stove warm on my back.
"Look at me," he said.
