"Send me the list," I said. "Names, hotels, room counts. Everything."

"If Bryce sees me send it, I'm fired."

"If he fires you, you have a job with me."

There was a small pause.

"You don't have a company."

"I will by the time he finds out."

The list came through ten minutes later.

Forty-six names.

A family of six from Littleton with four kids under twelve.

Two grandparents taking three grandchildren.

A college group, nineteen of them, booked under one tired-sounding professor.

I called Henry in Miami.

Then I called Grandpa.

He listened without interrupting, the way he did when the numbers mattered.

"Ninety-four thousand dollars," I said. "Both hotels, all seven nights."

"Call them back and give them my card," Grandpa said. "Not the company's. Mine."

"Grandpa, I can pay it. I have my own money."

"You'll pay the next one," he said. "There's going to be a next one. I want my name on this one."

By midnight both hotels had their money.

By 5:15 on Saturday morning, Henry, Grandpa and I were standing at Gate B32 at Denver International.
