Chapter 6: The Fourteenth Floor

Auchincloss Maritime keeps its offices on the fourteenth floor of a glass tower on Park Avenue.

I walked in on Monday at nine, with Derrick beside me and my mother's signed letter in my hand.

Two hundred people were already at their desks.

Dean's glass office stood at the end of the main floor, and he was inside it, on the phone, smiling.

He had shaved and put on his best suit.

He did not know yet that his badge had stopped working an hour ago.

I stopped in the middle of the floor and let the quiet spread.

"Good morning," I said. "I'm Bethany Ames. My family owns this company."

Keyboards stopped.

"I won't take much of your time."

Dean looked up through the glass and put down his phone.

He came out of his office fast, still smiling, and held out both hands.

"Bethany. Thank God. Let's go inside and talk."

"No."

I turned to the floor and opened the letter.

"Over the past ten months, a company card issued to Dean Mercer has been used for a crib, a stroller, a midwife, and the rent on an apartment on Atlantic Avenue."

"None of it was company business."

A woman at the nearest desk covered her mouth.

"Mr. Mercer's employment at Auchincloss Maritime ended at midnight, for cause. The family office will recover every dollar."

"Bethany," Dean said. His voice had dropped. "You can't do this to me in front of my people."
