Chapter 15: The Text
Kit's POV
For eight nights Hank sat on my step.
I knew it because I looked through the curtain every night before I turned off the lamp.
He sat with his back against the doorframe and a wool blanket over his shoulders, in a down coat with the collar up.
He held a mug of coffee that went cold in his hands.
He did not knock, and he did not speak.
In the morning the empty mug sat on the boards by my door, rinsed.
On the kitchen whiteboard, in his big square capitals, he had written his own name on Saturday and drawn a line through it.
Under it he had written: HANK: NOT ON THE BOARD.
Nobody erased it.
On the eighth night, Saturday, I rang the bell at six, and the four of them came in out of the dark in a line.
Hank took the chair at the far end of the long table.
I had set it for him on purpose, as far away from my right hand as the oak allowed.
We ate roast chicken with lemon and a pan of potatoes, and nobody talked much.
Jesse hummed.
Beck watched me eat, and Rolf watched Beck watching me, and Hank watched the salt.
