Chapter 18: St. Colman's
I walked down the aisle of St. Colman's at ten o'clock on Saturday in my mother's wedding dress.
Nobody had told the church to expect it.
A sound went through the pews, a rustle of two hundred people turning, and I kept my eyes on the dark wood box at the front.
It stood where I had stood last October, on the same three steps, under the same stained glass.
White lilies lay on the lid.
Donal was in the first pew on the groom's side, with the Dalton men filling the rest, in their dark suits.
He rose when he saw me, and so did every one of them.
I sat down in the front pew on the bride's side, alone, with the skirt spread around me.
The second pew on the groom's side held the Tellers.
Ambrose's mother, small and straight in black, with a rosary wound in her fingers.
His uncle, a heavy grey man with a ring on every hand.
And Ambrose himself, at the end, in the navy suit, with his eyes red and his jaw set, looking at the box.
My father sat in the third pew behind them.
He had put himself there, as the note said, and he did not look at me.
