Chapter 17: New Terms

By midnight his pulse was steady and the yellow rings were gone.

I sat on the edge of his bed in the Bay Ridge house with two fingers on his wrist and did not say a word.

Luca lay propped on the pillows, with his shirt open and a bandage on the inside of his elbow.

"You're angry," he said.

"Yes."

"Good. Say it."

"You put me out on the street in front of her."

"I did."

"You said it to me in the dark. 'I've never forgiven her.' And I lay there and let you."

"I know."

"You don't get to know," I said. "You get to hear it. I wanted to tell you in the car, in the cellar, in your bed. I was afraid you'd put a bullet in me before you read a page."

"I would have."

"Don't be honest at me."

"It's all I have left," Luca said.

I let go of his wrist.

I stood up, and I was shaking now, in a way my hands never had in a theater.

He sat forward and caught my hand.

"New terms," he said. "Tell me what you want."

"No lies. Not one. Not about your heart, not about what you're thinking."

"Yes."

"You do what I tell you medically, and you don't argue."

"Yes."

"If you ever call me Stansfield again like it's a crime, I walk."

"I'll call you Stansfield like it's a title."

"And when the week is over, I decide. You don't ask, and you don't send anyone after me."

His grip tightened.

"That last one costs me a great deal."

"Then pay it."

"Yes," he said roughly. "Come here."

I did not go gently.

I put one knee on the bed, and my mouth came down on his hard enough to hurt.

He made a sound against my lips, low in his chest, and caught my face in both hands.

His kiss was not careful and not sorry.

I pushed him back against the pillows and pulled his shirt off his shoulders.
