Chapter 17: Open Wide
Hallie's POV
On Friday morning, the front desk put a new patient in my first room at nine.
"She asked for you by name," the receptionist whispered. "She says you're a friend."
I knew before I opened the door.
Delaney lay back in my chair with her sunglasses pushed up in her honey hair and a paper bib clipped under her chin.
She smiled at me, wide and bright.
"Hallie. Hi. I thought, who better?"
I closed the door behind me.
I washed my hands thoroughly at the sink, and I put on my mask and my gloves.
"Lean back," I said.
"You're really going to do this?"
"You booked an hour. I don't waste an hour."
I tipped the light toward her face.
She watched me do it, and her eyes were enjoying themselves.
I took the mirror and the scaler and began at the back, top left, where people never brush.
"Open."
She opened.
She couldn't talk for a minute, and that was the best minute I'd had all week.
"Rhys signed the statement last night," she said, as soon as I took the mirror out. "Did you know that? Right at his kitchen island. He'll stand there and smile on Saturday."
"Open wider."
"He's very agreeable. I picked him for it."
"Your gum's inflamed here. Do you floss?"
She laughed, and I felt it in the instrument, a small bright shake.
"You think you're so calm."
"I think you have plaque."
Through the glass in the door, I saw the office manager walk past, slow, with her mouth a little open.
