Chapter 10: The Ladder

Joanna's POV

Abram Frayne walked across the dark ballroom and put both hands on my ladder.

"Come down," he said. "Slowly."

"I'm almost finished."

"You've been almost finished for twenty minutes. The banner is crooked."

I looked up at the banner.

It was crooked.

"It says WELCOME BACK," I said. "Nobody will check the angle."

"Two hundred women will check the angle." He kept his grip on the frame. "Come down, Dr. Wexford. I'll finish it."

"You run the hotel."

"I run the hotel," he agreed. "That's why I own a better ladder."

I came down one rung at a time.

On the last step my foot slipped on the bottom rail, and his hand closed around my elbow before I knew I was falling.

He held on, and I stood very still.

His palm was warm through my sweater.

I noticed that he was taller than I had thought, and that he smelled of coffee and clean cotton, and that the pale band on his ring finger was an inch from my wrist.

He let go first.

"Careful," he said.

"I'm fine."

"I know."

I picked up the roll of tape and gave it to him.

He stood on the ladder with surprising ease and fixed the banner in three quick motions.

I watched from below.

"You're good at that."

"I spent eleven years in hospital administration before this," he said. "Mostly I hung signs saying where to go."
