Chapter 12: Claire's Version
I drove straight from the clinic to Claire's apartment.
She lived on the second floor of a yellow house on Orchard Street, and she opened the door before I knocked.
She had been crying.
Her eyes were swollen, her hair was down, and she wore the pale green cardigan I had given her two Christmases ago.
"I knew you'd come," she said.
"Let me in."
"Of course."
She stepped back, and I walked into a living room I had sat in a hundred times.
The couch was where it had always been.
On the coffee table lay a blue notebook, a mug of cold tea, and a thick manila folder.
I looked at the folder.
It was the one from the waiting room.
"Daniel told you," Claire said.
"Everything."
"Everything he wanted to." She sat down on the couch and folded her hands. "Laur, I need you to listen before you say a word. Please."
"Say it."
"I lied to you for three years, and I did it for him."
"Say it, Claire."
She took a breath and looked up at me.
"It wasn't a fever," she said. "You know that now. But it wasn't only the accident, either."
"What are you saying?"
"The photo was real."
The room was silent.
"I wasn't going to tell you. Daniel begged me not to. He said you'd break again. But you came here today, and I can't carry it anymore."
"Claire."
"Ten days after Bea was born, you found out he was seeing someone. A woman from his school. You drove off in the snow to find him, and you hit the bank, and everyone said it was an accident."
