Chapter 21: The Extra Chair

"Winnie's kitchen," I said to my sister across the parking lot. "Ten minutes. Bring the folder."

She tilted her head, and I saw her measure me.

"You want to do this at Winnie's?"

"I want a witness who isn't related to us."

She laughed, soft and fond, and got into her car.

She came, which told me how sure she was.

Winnie had set out four mugs and a plate of lemon cookies on the oak table, and she sat at the head of it in her gardening cardigan with her glasses on their beaded chain.

The kids were at school.

Claire put the pink folder down on the table, kissed Winnie on the cheek, and sat.

"I'm glad we're all being adults," she said.

Daniel set his phone in the middle of the table with its screen up.

A red dot was blinking on it.

"I'm recording this," he said.

"Of course you are." Claire folded her hands. "Go ahead, Laur."

I laid the gray flip phone down beside Daniel's.

She looked at it.

It was the first time that day her face did not do anything she had planned.

"That's not mine," she said.

"It was in the zip pocket of your tan purse, behind the notebook. I took it Sunday while you were serving pie."

"You went through my bag."

"I did."

"That's theft, Laura."

"The PIN is your birthday."

Winnie reached out and slid the phone across to herself.

She opened it, and found the sent folder, and read, her lips moving a little.

Nobody spoke.

A cookie crumbled on the plate.

"Ask him where he really goes," Winnie said. She looked up over her glasses. "Eleven-oh-two at night, ten days after the child was born."
